Biological Computing: Using Cells as Computers

Biological Computing (or Biocomputing) involves using living biological components—like DNA, proteins, and cells—to perform computational tasks.

How it Works

Instead of transistors and electrons, biological computers use:

  • Biomolecules: DNA and RNA function as storage and logic gates.
  • Chemical Signals: Hormones and proteins act as “wires” to transmit information between components.

1. DNA Data Storage

DNA is incredibly dense and stable, capable of storing all the world’s digital data in a few kilograms for thousands of years.

2. Living Sensors

Engineered bacteria can be programmed to detect specific toxins in the environment and “calculate” an appropriate response, such as changing color or releasing a neutralizing agent.

Challenges

Biology is “noisy” and unpredictable compared to silicon. Developing reliable, programmable biological circuits requires advanced tools for DNA synthesis and CRISPR-based gene editing.
