Offline vs. Online AI Evaluation
AI systems are evaluated in two broad ways. Offline evaluation measures behavior on a fixed dataset before release, while online evaluation measures how the system performs with real users after deployment.
Offline Evaluation
Offline evaluation is useful for fast iteration and controlled comparison. It helps answer questions like:
- Did the new prompt improve accuracy on our benchmark?
- Did the retriever return more relevant passages?
- Did the model stay within the required output format?
Online Evaluation
Online evaluation captures what offline tests miss: changing user behavior, messy inputs, and business outcomes. Teams often monitor acceptance rate, resolution rate, escalation rate, or click-through rate after shipping.
Why Both Matter
Offline evaluation is safer and cheaper. Online evaluation is more realistic. Strong AI teams use offline tests to filter ideas before release, then use production data to decide what truly works.
