Long-Form Context Management: Beyond the Window

Even with context windows reaching 1M+ tokens, many enterprise datasets remain too large. Long-Form Context Management involves strategies to feed relevant data into models without hitting memory or compute limits.

Beyond Simple RAG

  • Dynamic Chunking: Instead of fixed-size blocks, use semantic boundaries (paragraphs, sections) to preserve context.
  • Summarization Trees: Recursively summarize parts of a document until the entire content fits within a manageable “compressed” summary.
  • Graph-Based Retrieval: Connecting related concepts across different documents to allow the model to follow a “thread” of information through a large corpus.

Modern Architectures

New attention mechanisms like Ring Attention and Linear Attention are being developed to reduce the quadratic cost of standard attention, potentially allowing for infinitely long context windows in the future.

Use Cases

These techniques are essential for legal discovery, medical record analysis, and repository-level code generation where context from thousands of files is required simultaneously.
