AI Observability: Seeing What Your Models Are Actually Doing

AI observability is the practice of monitoring how an AI system behaves after deployment. Traditional app metrics like uptime and CPU usage are not enough when the core behavior depends on prompts, retrieved context, model choices, and non-deterministic outputs.

What to Observe

  • Inputs: prompts, retrieved documents, tool arguments, and user metadata.
  • Outputs: response quality, refusals, hallucinations, and format errors.
  • System metrics: latency, token usage, cache hit rate, and cost per request.
  • Business outcomes: task completion, user satisfaction, and escalation rates.

Why It Matters

Without observability, teams often discover failures only through user complaints. A prompt update can silently reduce answer quality, a retriever can start returning stale context, or a model upgrade can increase cost without improving outcomes.

A Practical Starting Point

Instrument every request with a trace that links the prompt, retrieved context, model response, and evaluation result. Once those traces exist, it becomes much easier to debug regressions, compare versions, and improve the system with evidence instead of guesswork.
